Passionate writer, how can i get ahead?

i've wanted to be a sports writer or broadcaster for as long as i can remember.I'm going to be a senior and my grades and test scores are very good but i probably wont be able to attend a top school such as columbia or Syracuse. Is there anything i can do right now, as a high schooler, that could give me experience or an edge when it comes to finding work after college? could i submit stories to a local paper or ask for any opportunities there?
