What type of engineering should I study?

I want to become an aerospace engineer, but I'm not sure if there are that many jobs in this field. I'm thinking of doing 4 years for mechanical engineering (to make sure I have a degree that offers a broad spectrum of job opportunities), then going for a masters and PhD in Aerospace Engineering. Is this a good idea?
